The Background

Back in 90s, the GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, was still a youngster, and there was a great need for more information about its principles and functioning. Having studied the topic in hands-on works, including activities related to field measurements, radio coverage planning, standardization of the advanced functions of the 2G, and training, I realized there was room for publications that would clarify the standards in a technical yet common-sense way. That's how I decided to publish my very first book, "GSM-tekniikka" (GMS Technology) with WSOY in Finnish language, back in 1999. It is quite iteresting to find out that after more than two decades, the very basics this book summarized are still valid, although GSM has experienced various face-lifts thoughout this time. This book is not any more on sale in bookstores, but there are still enthusiasts who keep purchasing and selling it as a collector's piece.
As a background knowledge about the cover picture, I drafted countless versions to visualize the the radio networks and mobile phones until I ended up to apply a simplified, very simple but visually clear vector graphics. Ever since, I have used the very same style in my drawings of technical figures and cover pages.
As a fun fact, I also authored some common-sense, less technical publications about the mobile communications, and I designed a cartoon character named Pepe Phone (in Finnish, Pepe Puheleva), that adventured in the world of telecommunications with his friends clarifying select functions of the cellular phones. I also registered this character at the FINNISH PATENT AND REGISTRATION OFFICE. The culmination of this side story is the publication, again with WSOY, of "Kännyköinnin lyhyt oppimäärä", (Quick User's Guide for Mobile Communications), which I used as training material in my courses with the TIEKE, Finnish Information Society Development Centre, training the future instructors to deliver the course module that belonged to the IT driver's license concept of that time. These activities in such environment were of great joy and fun, exactly as the adventures of Pepe Phone were.
